Jamie Coughlan & Mr Double Down Present The Recession Sessions Part 2

Welcome back!

I hope the new week is finding you all well and good?

A big thank you to Jamie Coughlan and DJ Alena for letting me join them on Saturday for their on-going night, Bump & Hustle over in Shoreditch. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening of Funk and Soul, with a very clued up crowd in tow. I had a great night and I strongly urge you to make your way over to The Elbow Room on the second Saturday of each month if you can.

That little segue brings me onto today's post. Just over a year ago I joined forces with Jamie Coughlan and we set about putting together Part 1 of an ongoing mix series called the Recession Sessions. It's been a while coming but we've finally got round to piecing together Part 2 for your listening pleasure!

As before the concept remains the same, every track featured in the mix is easily obtainable and won't destroy your bank balance, proving that records don't always have to cost three figures to be great! Part two is a nice mix of classics, a few obscure sides, dance floor fillers as well as some nice ballads! There should hopefully be something here in to suit all tastes!

Feel free to share links to any suitable cheapies which fit todays bill with us in the comments section below! Sharing is Caring!

Enjoy the mix, stay safe and I'll be back later in the week with some more of 'The Good Stuff' for you!

Jamie Coughlan

Little Milton - She Put A Spell On Me - Checker

Fast, furious (and nice and cheap) R&B on a classic label. Fantastic VFM.

Slim Harpo - Don't Start Cryin' Now - Excello

Contender for the 'Best Use of 99c' chart.

Mr Double Down

Chuck Berry - Johnny 'B' Goode - Chess

Cracking R&B standard and for the price of a pint this should be in everyones collection.

Ray Charles Hit The Road Jack - His Masters Voice

Been giving this a few plays out of late at our Hook & Sling nights, sounds great over a big sound system!

Jamie Coughlan

C. Alexander & The Naturel Three - Somebody Special - Leo

This 45 did actually attract larger label interest after local success, though still remains very cheap on this the first issue. Very unusual wobbly bass effect on this.

Jimmy Reed - Christmas Present Blues - RRG

Obscure bluesey funk with a holiday theme. Nice bit of novelty.

Mr Double Down

Bobby Rush - Sock Boo-Ga-Loo - Checker

Nice uptempo number, great value for money IMHO

Mel Torme - I'm Comin' Home - London

Northern cracker, another H&S Favourite!

Bill Doggett - Night Train Pt1 - King

Nice organ- boosted version of the JB classic!

Otis Redding - Direct Me - Atco

One of my favourite Otis sides and a nice slice of Southern soul to boot.

Jamie Coughlan

Willi Hobbs - Yes My Goodness Yes - Silver Pox

Came out on Carolina's label Bandit Records then House of The Fox (the cheapie element) which gave it a wider distribution.

Carol Anderson - Holding On - Bigtree Records

What's to say here? Crossover soul that sounds like its gonna hurt the pocket but you can get it for next to nothing on a good day. Stratospheric value for money factor. Came out on Big Tree and Midtown and both issues can be got on the cheap but maybe not for long.

Eddie Lovette - What'cha Trying To Do To Me - Steady Records

Seems to be a tough one to pick up but can be done for single pound figures. Shockingly catchy with a fine groove.

Brothers By Choice - Baby You Really Got Me Going - Ala

My last copy came in at 5 quid and that's 5 quid I'd spend again and again and again. Doubt it will be this way for long as it's got some plays of late.

Calvin Stewart - You Turn Me On - Artly Records

Immensely likeable obscure 70s soul outing that seems to be be about and cheap at the moment.

Tony Clarke - Ghetto Man - Chicory Records

All time killer funk cheapie.

Mr Double Down

Ruby And The Party Gang - Ruby's House Party - Lawton Records

Greasy low down Boogaloo which always gets the dancefloor moving!

Huey 'Piano' Smith & The Clowns - High Blood Pressure - Ace Records

NOLA brilliance from Huey Smith. Underated artist, underated track!

Jamie Coughlan

Sam Dees - Don't Keep Me Hangin' On - Lo Lo Records

Actually very hard to find and usually seen at extortionate prices.

Chuck Bridges & The L.A. Happening - Keep The Faith - Vault

All time excellent and well known dollar bin record.

The Isley Brothers - Work To Do - T-Neck

What can you say about this 45? Its production says it all. Another one that seems to sneak out on lists at 20 quid where you can honestly say they've added a 0. Brilliant 45!

The Persuaders - Love Gonna Pack Up And Walk Out - Win Or Lose

Excellent version of this well covered song, and unless the recent hip hop star usage has forced the price up, it should still cost less than a few beers.

The End Results - Reminising - Motion City

For the small price you would be forgiven for whooping at the dancefloor friendly funk side however, the ballad flip is where it's at. A tidy result for any accidental ballad buyer. Heads you win, Tails you win. Can't be bad!

The Barrons - I'm So Lonely - Super Dome Records

This has had two airings on this site for the dancer flip side and rightly so, however I think the ballad side is the more interesting. Great opening sample.

Mr Double Down

Tony Allen - I - Specialty

Great Doo-wop-esq number which brings this mix to a close perfectly!
