I hope the start of a brand new week finds you all well and good?
With my past few weeks having been filled with sorting out our recent Soul Weekender, I seem to have acquired a backlog of guest contributions here at Camp Hook and Sling! Top of the pile to post up is a mix I received some while ago now, which has been on heavy rotation here since its arrival!
Marius Zahl Johnsen has previously dropped some goodness on us here at The Hook & Sling with a solo guest mix back in April 2009, which if you missed the boat first time round can be found HERE. That proved to be one of the most downloaded mixes to grace these pages and his second instalment today will no doubt match it!
He also joined us a second time, more recently here with Jamie Coughlan and Andy Marshall, with a joint mix that coincided with his visit to Bump & Hustle last July. You can catch that HERE.
Enjoy today’s long awaited second mix from Marius Zahl Johnsen, I’ll be back here shortly with some more of the ‘Good Stuff’ for you!
Ladies And Gentlemen, give it up for Marius Zahl Johnsen……
Track list
Gold - What About The Child - MRC
“One of the best 70’s tunes out there, and quite rare as well. Great tempo, great rhythm, great lyrics. Hard one to follow....
Standing Room Only - Sacrifice - Lamar
...which is why I put this one in next. It blew me away the first time I heard it, and still does.
P.J. City - Straight Forward (Non-stop) - Rise
Quite recent discovery here, seemingly getting spins all over the place, and rightly so. Quite quirky, but really nice!! (and its not 70’s, I know, but had to include it)
Vision - Dead Weight - Landmark
Unknown to me until recently. Piano driven female ghetto disco, dead cheap.
Trace Of Smoke - Treasure Mind - BJ
Classic TX funky modern 45 with killer bass and a nice breakdown.
Troubled Child - Let Me Be Your Backdoor Man - Note
Slightly odd Alabama funk 45 from 1975.
Black Lightning - Trouble - MCA
Hard as nails 70s straight funk, coming down in price of late, which is nice if you need a copy.
Pure Funk - Nothing Left Is Real - Planet Earth
This one is just about the best 70’s funk cut out there. Quite elusive as well. Which is nice when you have one.
Funkhouse Express - Strive - Buddah
Their "Chase Your Blues Away" is decent enough, but really this is the one to keep an eye out for. Cheapo!
Asterix - Keep Yourself Together - Sho-Pro International
Wonderful 70s instrumental funk cut, easily available from Craig Moerer.
Gate - Streetman - Violetville
This is one of my favourite recent acquisitions. Catchy, infectious, up-tempo, all good.
Backyard Construction (Jimmie Williams) - I Want Your Lovin' - B.Y.C Productions
Getting into the more limp-wristed zone here, great slice of modern soul.
Invisible Man's Band - Really Wanna See You - Boardwalk
Great and in demand modern/boogie.
L.T.D. - Love Is What You Need - AM
Quite reminiscent of their big hit "Back In Love", but much better.
Bobby Thurston - I Know You Feel Like I Feel - Prelude
The flip to "Is Something Wrong With You", and so much better IMO.
Sun – Just A Minute Of Your Time - Capitol
Killer modern on major label, but not that easy to pick up actually.
Timeless Legend - I Was Born To Love You - Dawn-Lite
Modern soul anthem, and rightly so. Killer intro, and uphill from there. So good, so rare.”
